Asian solar companies increase their clout
Manufacturers of photovoltaic products in Asia have formed their own association. A total of 670 photovoltaic companies, 23 industry organizations and 15 research institutes have launched the Asian Photovoltaic Industry Association (APVIA), as reported by the financial website "ECO reporter". The inaugural meeting elected founder and CEO of Suntech Power Zhengrong Shi as the first President of the APVIA.
The founding of the association was long overdue. APVIA was registered in Singapore in 2009, but almost three more years went by before the actual founding. APVIA will be one of the strongest associations in the industry. Asian companies, most of them Chinese, produce more than half of the solar modules used worldwide. The Asian home market has so far been rather weak but should represent 30% of the world market by 2015, said Shi after his election.
